Last American Male Tennis Player Loses at U.S. Open

Sept. 8 — Twentieth-seeded Sam Querrey has been ousted from the U.S. Open, assuring that no American man will make the tournament quarterfinals.

The 20th-seeded Querrey lost to No. 25 Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a nearly 4 1/2 hour match in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Querrey was the last U.S. man left in the tournament after Mardy Fish, John Isner, and Andy Roddick were eliminated.

America's last male champion at the U.S. Open was Roddick in 2003. The country's only hope for a singles title now rests with Venus Williams, the lone U.S. player left in the women's draw.
