Taiwan Wins Three Tennis Gold Medals at East Asian Games

Dec. 10 -- Chinese Taipei took three gold and two silver medals in the tennis event at the East Asian Games in Hong Kong Thursday.

Taiwan swept the board in the mixed doubles final, which saw Chuang Chia-jung and Yi Chu-huan edge out compatriots Hsieh Su-wei and Lee Hsin-han 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 to win gold, with Hsieh and Lee winning silver.

Earlier that day, Chuang and Hsieh won gold in the women's doubles after defeating South Korea's Kim Song Jung and Lee Jin A in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.

Taiwan's Chang Kai Chen pulled off the women's singles title after coming from behind to beat China's Zhang Shuai 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

In the men's doubles final, Taiwan's Li Chu-huan and Lee Hsin-han lost to China's Zeng Shao-xuan and Zhang Ze 4-6, 6-7, 4-7 to win silver.

However, Taiwan failed to beat their own record of four gold medals won at the last East Asian Games in Macau in 2005. Chen Nan, chief coach of Taiwan's national tennis team for international competitions, said the games were merely seen as a warm up for the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
