Roger Federer to Debut in Shanghai Tennis Tournament
October 13 -- Third seed Roger Federer returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at the Shanghai Open following his semifinal loss to world No. 2 Novak Djokovic at the US Open. The Swiss has compiled a 44-11 record in 2010, bolstered by title-winning runs at the Australian Open and Cincinnati.
The Swiss holds a 1-0 head-to-head series advantage over opening-round opponent John Isner. The world No. 3 won their only previous meeting at the 2007 US Open.
World No. 20 Isner survived a challenging first-round match, forced to save seven match points against qualifier Lukasz Kubot. The American crushed 24 aces en route to a 4-6, 7-6(9), 7-6(7) win in nearly three hours of play. Isner remains on course to record his 36th ATP World Tour victory of the season to advance to the round of 16.
