Young Qualifier Stuns Melzer in Brisbane ATP Debut

Jan. 5 -- Young Australian Matthew Ebden made an impressive ATP debut with a straight sets defeat of world No.28 Jurgen Melzer at the Brisbane International. The 22-year-old won, 7-5 6-1 to progress to the second round.

Ebden will face 2009 Brisbane International semifinalist Richard Gasquet on Wednesday. Earlier this week, he beat Isaac Frost, Brydan Klein and Marinko Matosevic in the tournament qualifiers round to become one of four qualifiers to enter the main draw.

Carsten Ball, the son of former Australian professional player Syd Ball, dispatched Germany's Mischa Zverev 7-5 6-1. Ball will face former world No.1 and top seed Andy Roddick in the second round.
