Federer, Nadal in Qatar Open Semifinals

Jan. 8 -- World No. 1 Roger Federer and former top-ranked Rafael Nadal were quarterfinal winners Thursday at the season-opening Qatar Open.

The two-time Doha titlist Federer went the distance with Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in one hour, 47 minutes, whileNadal defeated Steve Darcis 6-1, 2-0.

Federer's semifinal opponent on Friday will be third-seeded world No. 6 Russian Nikolay Davydenko, while Nadal will take on Serbian Viktor Troicki.

Last year's surprise ATP World Tour Finals champion Davdyenko advanced Thursday with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7) victory over Croat Ivo Karlovic.

The winner of this $1.11 million event will take home $185,850.
