Uganda's Duncan Mugabe Turns Focus to ATP
Mar. 9 -- A nation starved of international success on the tennis courts finally had cause to celebrate as 19-year-old Duncan Mugabe won both Uganda and Kenyas premier tournaments.
Mugabe ended a seven-year winless streak for the host nation with a straight sets victory over Kenyan Denis Ochieng in the Nile Gold Uganda Open in Kampala in February. He went on to capture the Kenya Open becoming the first Ugandan to win the event in 31 years. Stephen Kasigwa last won it in 1979.
Mugabe, who a year ago was knocked out of the same tournaments, exhibited maturity that prevailed over his more experienced opponents.
He attributed his success so far, to his manager Cedric Babu and several individuals that give him moral and financial support.
The Ugandan teenager, whose tennis career was bolstered by a five-year stint at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) training centre in South Africa, has his sights set far beyond success in the region.
The teenager hopes to compete in Challenger to tournaments which are just a step below the ATP, the tennis professionals league.
